Women’s Gym Wear: What should women wear to the gym?

When you go to the gym, it is important to wear clothes that are breathable and flexible. It is good to look good, but remember that fitness and safety are your foremost concerns. Wear clothing that will support your workout and maintain a balance between fitness and style.

While selecting an appropriate gym outfit for yourself, comfort is the first thing that should come in your mind. You need functional clothing, which will ease your movements and make you do more exercises.

Choose a t-shirt/tee that is specifically designed for wicking sweat. Consider wearing a tank top or sports bra for more breathability. Sports bras are very individual but look for a simple design with a snug fit and full coverage especially for high impact exercises. Do not think that sports bras are all made equally, they are not. It is no good wearing one designed for yoga if you are planning on running or doing aerobics.

In certain forms of exercises like yoga, tighter clothes that hug your body are necessary. It helps your instructor to get a better idea about your postures and structure.

Wear moisture-wicking material to avoid chafing and keep cool. Your sports t-shirt won’t cling and go see-through on you. Some performance-enhancing, comfy materials include polyester, nylon, wool and spandex. Bamboo is another great option as it is eco-friendly, sustainable, antimicrobial, minimize odours.

Those of you who want a better fit can go for synthetic fibres in solid colours. You can also go for neon shades, including yellow, orange, lime, pink and green.

You should be able to perform a full range of leg workouts while you are wearing the bottoms. Shorts may afford you the most flexibility. Pick gym shorts that offer enough coverage and feature a stretchy waistband for comfort. If you feel shy, wear high-waist gym leggings, sweats or yoga pants.

For yoga investing in a pair of cropped leggings would be a good idea. Choose stretch pants for a session comprising of general exercises and Pilates.

When it comes to shoes, then you better choose the ones that are both comfy and practical. Bring shoes that will offer plenty of protection for your feet and legs. Each activity at the gym has a separate requirement regarding footwear.

A good pair of trainers or sneakers is so important if you plan to do cardio. Bring running shoes if you will be running on a treadmill. During weight training or high impact exercises, wear your training shoes with ample ankle, knees, sole and arch support.

Do not forget to wear socks before wearing shoes. It would be easy to overlook the fact that your socks work together with your shoes to keep sweat, discomfort and potential injury to a minimum. One is the standard ankle sock which will ideally sit below the top of your sneaker.

Short socks will give your legs more space to breathe, while high socks can be useful for wicking away sweat. Remember to wear lightweight, breathable socks. Nothing comes close to a good pair of compression socks as far as discretion, comfort and durability are concerned.

Weight lifting gear is a must for beginners and advanced weight lifters to avoid injuries. Hand gloves give protection on both the palm & back of your hands. Use knee caps to add stability and support to weaker joints so you can focus on your workout without any pain. Elbow sleeve supports stiff and sore muscles and joints while still allowing you to retain your range of motion.

Always carry a soft, clean face towel to wipe your sweat away, the seat of a machine, and bench. If required take along a full-size towel (in case you need to shower and head to another engagement).

Rather than showering and changing into other clothes, it just makes sense to throw on a sports jacket over your gym wear and head out. Like all good activewear, these jackets too are made from moisture-wicking, anti-microbial fabric. Also, jackets help you look stylish.
